These acronyms get thrown around constantly — sometimes incorrectly, even by shops. Here's a plain-English guide to what each module actually controls and why the difference matters.
"ECU" stands for Engine Control Unit in common usage — but technically it's a generic term for Electronic Control Unit, which describes any computer module in a vehicle. That's the root of most of the confusion. When someone says "the ECU," they usually mean the engine computer. But in the strictest sense, your transmission, body, and dozens of other systems also have ECUs.
The engine computer. Manages fuel delivery, ignition timing, and air/fuel ratios based on sensor data. Often used interchangeably with ECM.
Effectively the same thing as the ECU in most contexts. It runs the engine. Some manufacturers use ECM, others use ECU — the role is the engine management computer.
A combined computer that manages both the engine and the transmission. Used heavily on many GM and domestic platforms. If the engine and transmission share one brain, it's usually a PCM.
Dedicated to the transmission when it has its own computer. Manages shift points, shift firmness, torque management, and converter lockup strategy.
Controls body-related functions: locks, windows, lighting, wipers, and much more. Replacement BCMs almost always require configuration and relearning.
Whether your vehicle uses a combined PCM or separate ECM and TCM changes how it's tuned, diagnosed, and programmed. It also affects what happens when a module is replaced — a combined PCM can mean one programming procedure covers engine and transmission, while separate modules require individual attention.
